Paris Photo
Paris will become the world's photography capital in November, hosting more than 70 exhibitions as part of its Photo Month. The Paris Photo fair is at the heart of this cultural event.
On 11-14 November this international exhibition will be opening its doors at the Carrousel du Louvre for the eighth year running, focusing this year on contemporary photography. With its 105 exhibitors (94 galleries, including 63 from outside France, and 11 publishers), the Paris Photo fair is set to attract over 40,000 visitors.
As far as photography auctions are concerned, however, the focus is shifting away from Paris, with US and UK auction houses now tending to dominate. Artcurial is currently the only Paris auctioneer to be holding a photography sale in November. It will be putting the Hachette photography collection - comprising over 250 photos from the agencies of the Hachette Filipacchi Photos group (Hoa-Qui, Keystone, Rapho, Top and Gamma) - up for auction on 13 November, and bringing a more diverse collection of photos under the hammer the following day.
The all-powerful American auction machine is putting the French photography market under increasing pressure. Barely a week before Paris Photo, one of the biggest ever contemporary photography collections will be put up for auction by Phillips in New York. This sale is expected to bring in more than USD 10 million - five times the total turnover made on all French photography sales in 2003. France, the world's
second largest photography market in 2002, was relegated to third place (behind the UK) in 2003.
